Think you had a bad day at work?

So your boss yelled at you, the copier ate your report, etc etc. Just remember you could have been minding your own business, escorting or docking/undocking a ship when your line parts and comes back at you like the tail of one seriously pissed off dragon. Something for any deckhand to remember while working around any of these new generation synthetic lines that are designed to not store energy and snap back. Evidently occasionally they do! In my limited time on tractor tugs, I’ve never seen a big line on a ship handling winch fail, though I have seen some three strand and braided synthetic dock lines and lines up to a barge fail. After seeing it happen once it really reinforced for me to stand back from the bitt as you handle lines under tension, and be very very aware of where you are standing.
