The itch

Thanks to the wonders of modern communications I can be reminded more and more of what I am missing at home this time of year. At my father’s boatyard launching season has been in full swing and it’s always something to see. I’d love to take one picture a day from a high vantage point of the yard filling over a month. What it really makes me miss is the excitement of getting the family boat in the water and the trips to come over the summer. This year will be e first year for me that it is my boat, and my trips that I am getting excited for.
As a kid I wanted to be a solo ocean racer, I was fascinated by it. I devoured books on the subject and recently have started reading some of them again. It has given me that itch I once had to pile on sail and reach for that distant horizon. Re-reading Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum really brought it back for me. Though some things have changed, I know now I wouldn’t want to do it alone. This passion for sailing and eventually maybe voyaging is something I want to share with my therapist other half, and right now Safari is the first step to that dream.
So bring on the channel fever, I’m ready to go home for a month and get the boat wet. It’s time to make a few voyages of my own.
